Google sues BT over patents

Google is suing BT, claiming the British telecoms group has infringed a number of its technologies.
Google sues BT
Google has accused BT of aiding "patent trolls" in legal cases

The search giant has launched a series of legal actions against the London-based firm in California, claiming four of its patents have been violated, and has also filed a separate case in the UK.
BT had been expecting such action after it launched its own case against Google in 2011.
That dispute has yet to be resolved.
"We have always seen litigation as a last resort, and we work hard to avoid lawsuits," said a spokeswoman for Google.
"But BT has brought several meritless patent claims against Google and our customers - and they've also been arming patent trolls."
The term "patent troll" describes firms that acquire patents so that they can later extract settlements from companies on infringement claims.
In 2012, New Jersey-based intellectual property owner Suffolk Technologies sued Google and US internet service provider AOL over two patents it had acquired from BT.
In addition, Steelhead Licensing - another firm which owns patents but does not produce products of its own - has filed a case against 14 handset makers and mobile networks, including Google's Motorola unit, claiming infringement of a wireless technology which used to be owned by BT.
A spokesman for the British firm said it did not comment on pending litigation.
Google first
Google has struck back with claims that BT has infringed a method to allow PCs to use an internet-based telephone system based on a patent originally filed by Fujitsu.
And it says BT failed to license a system used to let computer servers prioritise data - an IBM invention now owned by the search firm.
Previous cases involving Motorola were filed ahead of Google buying the Razr handset maker.
BT and Google are next set to meet in court in Delaware in July for a mediation hearing about the 2011 case.

Submit Blog Pings

Now that your Blog appears in several Blog and Feed directories, you would want to keep these directories and search engines notified of your latest blog updates. By pinging some of the services, they will be able to crawl or visit your site to index the latest blog contents. You can ping them when you have created a new post or updated an old post. Fortunately for us, there are a number of useful services that make it easy for us to submit the pings to the tracking sites.

First essential step. Go to Settings -> Publishing and under “Send Pings”, select “Yes”. Whenever your blog is updated, Blogger will ping certain services that track blog changes.

Rather than pinging individual tracking sites, we have been using services which help us update different sites and search engines that include Verisign's Weblogs.com, Yahoo!'s blo.gs, Technorati, Newsgator, Feedburner, Moreover, Bulkfeeds and Syndic8. All we need to do is to enter the Blog URL and Blog Title and they will send the pings to all the sites we select.

Ping Services

Google Blog Search Ping Service - We thought we should mention this. For new bloggers who do not find their sites when they key them into the NavBar search box, ping this site.

Pingoat - A very comprehensive list of sites that you can choose to ping. The service is also very fast and it is done within seconds.

Ping-O-Matic - Less comprehensive list.

Blog Flux Ping Service - A list of sites as comprehensive as Pingoat's but the ping takes a much longer time and is not often successful.

Feeds Pings - A short list but has pretty relevant sites.

There are other services which volunteer to send the pings on your behalf. Some of them are services provided to members only. You may also ping individual sites like Technorati. However, we think that the above services would have sufficiently covered many of the popular tracking sites.

Blogger SEO (Traffic Exchange)

Blog Traffic Exchange and AdSense
After doing up nice websites with interesting contents, the webmasters' dilemma is usually one of attracting visitors to their sites. Having more visitors is gratifying; it is a reward that website owners deserve for putting time and effort into their sites.

Traffic exchange networks were designed to promote visitor traffic to websites or blogs. The idea is simple – members of the network surf each other's sites. Upon setting up an account with a traffic exchange program, you will be entitled to earn 'credits' by manually surfing other members' sites. Depending on the program, you may have anything between 0.5 to 1.0 credit for every site you visit. There is a timer at the top or bottom frame of the page to compel you to remain at the site for a period of time. This can range between 10 to 30 seconds. You are then required to click one of the images to correspond with the given image in order to proceed to the next random site. This is to prevent autosurfing hacks that may cheat the system.

With the 'credits' you earn, you can assign them to your blogs. For every visitor you get to your blog, 1 credit will be deducted until all your 'credits' are spent. In a nutshell, the more blogs you visit, the more visitors you get to your blogs.

Alas, no program is perfect. While the concept of traffic exchange sounds good, there are the negative aspects that you should consider as well. I'll summarize the good and bad points of traffic exchange.

Pros of traffic exchange

1. The programs are free, that is if you are not buying the 'credits' but earning them.

2. For some programs, you can specify the category of blogs you would like to view or the sort of visitors you would like to have. The traffic is therefore targeted.

3. While viewing other member blogs, you may come across a couple of interesting ones that you can re-visit or learn from.

4. Since the programs work well only if they have a wide network of members, the administrators often conduct mini contests and games to interest the members. You may find some fun in these communities.

Cons of traffic exchange

1. The biggest negative point is that such traffic exchanges run counter to many advertising programs, especially those that pay you based on impressions you get to your site. A notable one is Google AdSense. If your site's traffic is mainly through traffic exchanges, be prepared to receive reminders like this from the Google administrator:-

It has come to our attention that invalid clicks or impressions have been generated on the Google ads on your site(s) through users of third-party programs paid or provided with other incentives to visit your site. Such programs may include, but are not limited to auto-surf, pay-to-surf, pay-to-read, or pay-to-click sites.

2. A number of the sites that register with traffic exchanges are new sites and are not worth the time reading. Many of the established ones that have a good following of readers do not need such traffic exchange programs to boost their traffic.

3. After surfing for a while, you would also find yourself looking at the same sites over and over again, simply because only a fraction of the members are active users. It may be boring in that sense.

4. While I make it a point to read some sites, I believe that many people don't. They may be doing their homework or watching television, and mindlessly clicking the image after every 30 seconds or so. You may be getting more visitors but these are not the people who appreciate your blog contents.

Blog Traffic Exchange sites

If you want to have a go at it, here are the ones I think you can consider.

1. TrafficG

This is not blog specific, and you will see a number of non-blog websites. The ratio of 1:1 is good, and the longer surf time of 30 seconds means that you might get more quality traffic, people who browse your blog contents.

Adobe page Maker 7 Registered

Adobe page Maker 7 Registered Adobe Page Maker software is the ideal page layout program for business, education, and small- and home-office professionals who want to create high-quality publications such as brochures and newsletters. Get started quickly with templates, graphics, and intuitive design tools; work productively across Adobe applications; and easily leverage existing content to create customized communications.
Not quite on a par with InDesign or QuarkXPress, Adobe PageMaker 7 is still a professional-level page layout application. Marketed as a small business/enterprise publishing solution, Page Maker shines just as bright as the similarly-targeted Microsoft Publisher in output but not in price or ease of use. However, lack of development (in favor of InDesign) means that you won't be seeing any future upgrades and enhancements to stay current with other desktop publishing software.
Once the darling of high-end work, Adobe Page Maker now targets business users. With features for non-designers, including templates and clip art, it still retains its pro-level attributes. Version 7 adds merge, PDF import/export, native Photoshop and Illustrator format support, and a converter for some QuarkXPress and Publisher files. Type controls and layout options make it a designer's tool. Improved Word support and data merge features increase its usefulness for small business users.
Not as inexpensive or easy-to-use as Microsoft Publisher and missing the newest "must-have" features of InDesign and QuarkXPress, PageMaker is somewhere in the middle - a capable program for general desktop publishing tasks for individuals and small to mid-size businesses requiring a product with widespread industry support and high-end capabilities. Despite its marketing focus, it is still a viable option for freelance desktop publishing.

AVG Internet Security 2013 Full Version

AVG Internet Security 2013 Full Version
AVG Internet Security 2013 is a capable security suite which does a generally very good job of protecting your PC from dangers, both on and offline.

At the program's core is AVG's strong antivirus engine. A little more accurate in this release, and with significantly reduced scanning times, this monitors every file you access, detecting and removing malware before it can cause any damage. And, conveniently, Whole Computer scans now look for and remove rootkits, as well: you don't have to run a separate scan to locate them.

The suite also includes a firewall, which protects you from network attacks and monitors running programs to make sure malware can't "phone home". A key improvement here is that this now works almost entirely automatically, so you're unlikely to be hassled with pop-ups and alerts any more.

The spam filter is also significantly enhanced. The last edition blocked only 55% of our test junk emails; AVG Internet Security 2013 has raised the detection rate to an impressive 88%.

And the suite also benefits from a new Windows 8-style interface. While this looks a little plain, we found it simple to use, with the various tiles delivering quick access to the program's various functions and features. An Options menu allows you to carry out just about any Internet Security Suite action in just a couple of clicks, and if you're still a little confused then a good local Help file will quickly point you in the right direction.

The news isn't all quite so good. Previously AVG Internet Security was able to add icons to results from all the main search engines, highlighting dangerous sites so that you'd know not to click their links. Now, these icons only appear when you use AVG's own Secure Search, either via the suite's browser toolbar, or by changing your browser search page. (AVG Internet Security 2013 will set this up by default during installation, but if you'd rather it leave your browser untouched then choose the Custom Installation option and you can turn the relevant options off.)

Fortunately, the suite does include other technologies to help keep you safe online. AVG's LinkScanner module vets web pages before they're displayed in the browser, for instance, and blocked a little more than half of our test malicious URLs. And if something does get downloaded then it'll be vetted by the antivirus engine, which will detect and remove most dangerous files.

And so, on balance, AVG Internet Security 2013 looks like a solid move forward. Not everyone will like the slightly plain interface, and browsing protection still needs work, but otherwise the suite is faster, more accurate and smarter than before, and it does a generally good job of keeping your PC safe from harm.

4G to affect TV reception in two million homes

Only Freeview TV and boxes are likely to be affected by 4G
Filters will be provided for Freeview televisions which experience reception problems following the roll out of 4G later this year.

Ofcom estimates that the TV viewing in up to 2.3 million British households could be affected by 4G but only 40% of them have Freeview.

Satellite receivers will not be affected, the watchdog claims.

Money from 4G auction winners will be used to fund the provision of filters for those who need them.

At the moment only mobile operator EE is able to offer customers the 4G service, which provides faster mobile internet connections.

The other operators are currently bidding for licences in an auction run by telecoms watchdog Ofcom.
Up to £180m from the auction will be used to fund the filters, a spokesperson from Ofcom said.

However, around 1% of affected Freeview households will be unable to use them and will be offered an alternative instead.

Ofcom estimates there may be fewer than 1000 homes in the UK who will not be able to access those alternatives either and will be left without television services.

A not-for-profit organisation called Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited (DMSL) has been created to tackle the problem.

"I look forward to working closely with broadcasters and mobile network operators to ensure everyone continues to be able to receive their current TV service," said newly appointed chief executive Simon Beresford-Wiley.

"DMSL plans to pre-empt the majority of potential interference issues caused by 4G at 800 MHz and existing TV services. We're focused on being able to provide anyone who may be affected with the information and equipment they'll need to ensure they continue to receive free-to-air TV."

Last month Free-view homes in South Wales had to re-tune their TVs and boxes following technical changes to a transmitter in order to make way for 4G.
